Cytotoxicity testing is a key step in assessing the safety and effectiveness of medical devices. It helps determine whether a product induces toxic reactions to cells, ensuring user safety before the device enters the market.

What is a Cytotoxicity Test?

cytotoxicity test

The In Vitro Cytotoxicity Test is an essential part of Biocompatibility Testing. Without cytotoxicity data, biocompatibility evaluation cannot be completed. It acts as a "gatekeeper" in the biological evaluation system, serving as a critical checkpoint for assessing the safety of medical devices and materials.

This test is conducted outside the body to evaluate a material's toxic effects on cultured cells. By observing cell survival rates and morphological changes after exposure to the test material, researchers can determine whether the material has toxic potential. Such tests are widely applied in the safety evaluation of medical devices, biomaterials, and pharmaceuticals.

  1. Ensuring Product Safety Cytotoxicity testing identifies potential toxic risks in medical device materials at an early stage, preventing possible harm to patients during clinical use. It ensures that materials in contact with the human body will not release harmful substances, safeguarding patient health and safety.

2. Meeting Regulatory Requirements Global regulatory authorities have strict requirements for the approval of medical devices. Cytotoxicity testing is a mandatory step for compliance with certifications such as U.S. FDA approval and EU CE marking. Successfully passing this test helps companies ensure compliance with international standards and enter global markets.
